Stereotyping
Everyday we stereotype people. We may not be aware of what we are doing but we judge people easily and categorize them. A stereotype is a predictive generalization about a person or situation. When we place people in a certain category its shows how they measure up to our standards and the personal constructs we apply. From this type of generalization we predict how they will act and what they will do. We stereotype people based on how we think a person fits in in our society. Stereotypes don't necessarily reflect actual similarities between people. They are mostly based on our perceptions of similarities between people on social perspectives that we've internalized. Often we think we know a person just by what we see but we don't take the time to get to know them before we stereotype them. Stereotypes can be accurate or just as easily inaccurate. Sometimes, we misunderstand people and categorize too fast which causes us to have the wrong idea about a person. By stereotyping people we could be missing out on relationships and friendships that could have a great impact on our lives. We must think about the effect it could have on the person that we stereotype because we could end up saying something harmful when we ourselves could be wrong.
